Dom Theodore Baily (1898-1966)

Artist and member of the Benedictine Order, working in graphic art, sculpture and stained glass. Born Harold Baily, he studied at Dulwich College and entered the novitiate of Downside Abbey in 1914 and took the name Theodore. He settled at Caldey in 1920 and in 1922 went to Paris and trained under Georges Desvallières and Maurice Denis. He returned to work among the community on Caldey Island in 1923, where there are several examples of his stained glass. He was also a friend and associate of Eric Gill, and work by both artists share similarities. Dom Theodore moved with the Benedictine community to Prinknash in 1928, where he also made windows for the church. He subsequently moved with the community to Farnborough.
