Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones (1833-1898)

Artist and designer born in Birmingham in 1833, Edward Coley Burne-Jones was educated at Exeter College, Oxford, where he first met William Morris. He became a pupil of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and developed his characteristic Pre-Raphaelite style. Burne-Jones first began designing stained glass in 1856, and in 1861 joined Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. The firm changed its name to Morris & Co. in 1875, after which Burne-Jones was responsible for designing most of the stained glass output of the firm. He was also a painter, designer of tapestries and a book illustrator. Burne-Jones was knighted in 1894. His designs continued to be used by Morris & Co. long after his death in 1898, and were influential on others, notably Henry Holiday.
