Margam Abbey was founded in 1147 by monks of the Cistercian abbey of Clairvaux, and dissolved in 1536. The twelfth-century nave of the abbey church survived as a private chapel to the Margam estate, and has served as the parish church since 1913. The building was partly rebuilt in around 1805-10, while the nave roof dates to 1872-3; the east wall is of a similar date.
