Celtic Studios (about 1948-1993)

Celtic Studios was the first firm producing stained glass in Wales. The firm was established in 1948 in Swansea, by Howard Martin and his cousin Hubert Thomas. They strove to remain true to the traditions of the arts & crafts movement, showing originality in their designs rather than reliance on traditional features copied from medieval originals. Celtic Studios' windows are characterized by bold drawing and - at least in the earlier period - avoidance of repetitive design.

The Studio was responsible for more than 650 windows during its existence, many of which are in south Wales, but also in north Wales, England and North America. A third of their output, including some of their best work, was exported to Canada, and images of these windows may be found on the Institute for Stained Glass in Canada's web museum.
