Chapel (Baptist)

Cause founded around 1861 in a loft over a stable in City Road as an offshoot of Bethany Baptist Church. Present church built 1861-63 by W. G. Habershon of London (compare with Conway Road Methodist Church by the same architect). Cruciform plan dictated by Lord Tredegar, the ground landlord. Walls of carboniferous limestone "the geological character of the stone suggests that it came in as ballast in Cory coal ships from co. Galway". (The Cory family were members of the congregation.) Cost £3600. Opened 22 May 1862.
