Vine decoration at the base of the Cross
detail from Christ Reigning from the Cross
Photo © Martin Crampin | about 1950 Robed relief figure of Christ in Majesty on the Cross, with angels either side, set on a painted blue and gold background. Vine motifs at the base of the cross.technique: carved, painted size: 200 cm (height of figure) [approx] Church of St Cynllo, Llanbister, Powys east wall of the chancel Given by Miss Gertrude Mary Lewis in memory of her parents, John Evans and Mary Lewis, and her sister Agnes, of Trawscoed. W.D. Caroe restored this church in 1908, and, although later, the Christ figure looks like his handiwork (compare with his Christ figure at Crickhowell). Caroe himself died in 1938, but it could be the work of Terence Carr (died 1966) a partner in the firm, who continued the tradition of carving. Richard Haslam says that it is 'emphatically' of around 1950, but this is too restrictive. The 'Caroe-style' Christus Rex is somewhat more timeless than this. |
