Two-light window depicting Christ handing the keys to Peter.

technique: stained glass
size: 50 cm (width of each light)
Designer: Roy Lewis

Church of St Peter, Little Newcastle, Pembrokeshire
east wall of the chancel

Given in memory of Caroline Raymond, John Jenkyn Parry and Raymond Parry. The window is a precursor of a major scheme inaugurated in 1990 to commission new windows for the nave from the Swansea Institute. The artist, Roy Lewis, had been a lecturer there before moving to Australia. Note that Lewis depicts Christ as beardless.

Peter's confession of Christ 'Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God' (Matt.16:16) provokes Jesus' promise that He will build His church on that confession (v.18) and to the apostle give 'the keys of the kingdom of heaven' (v.19). This is the incident which inspires this work in the east, principal, window of the church, dedicated to Peter.
