Photo © Martin Crampin, Imaging the Bible in Wales | about 1920-1928 Wooden work piece.medium: wood technique: carved, painted size: 40 cm (height) [approx] artist: possibly Eric Gill artist: probably Theodore Baily Caldey Abbey, Caldey Island Abbey common room The carving closely resembles an Orthodox icon, and has been attributed to Eric Gill. However Gill's friend Dom Theodore Baily, a monk of Caldey, was influenced by Orthodox iconography, and it is perhaps more likely that the carving is by Baily, rather than Gill. |
