The Virgin of Mercy

The centre light depict the standing figure of Mary, amid a group including children in the outer lights. technique: stained glass firm/studio: Clayton & Bell Church of St Illtyd, Llantwit Major, Vale of Glamorgan east wall of the south aisle The window depicts a version of the 'Madonna della Misericordia' (Virgin of Mercy), most famously depicted in an altarpiece by Piero della Francesca at Sansepolcro, Tuscany (completed 1462). The altarpiece, and most other depictions, show figures grouped under the protection of Mary's cloak, although in this window the figures are grouped at the side. With a basket of bread (?) and ewer below, the composition is similar to scenes depicting Dorcas, or acts of Mercy, subjects which are much more common.
