Beneath each of the seated angels are quotations from 'Jerusalem the Golden' by the twelfth-century French Benedictine monk Bernard of Cluny.

Given in memory of Elizabeth Mary Rolls, by her children, in 1879.

Adrian Barlow attributes the design of the figures to Wyndham Hope Hughes, who had left Kempe's employment in 1878, as they appear to be a rearrangement of cartoons for musical angels in a window at West Kirby (1878).
