The Mystic Marriage of St Catherine and Christ in the House of a Pharisee
Photo © Martin Crampin | perhaps 1522 Single-light window. The upper scene shows the Virgin and child enthroned, with Catherine and Barbara. Catherine holds her sword and a ring given by the infant Christ, who reaches out to her. A portion of Catherine's wheel is shown below. Barbara holds a large feather and a tower. Below, Christ is seated at the table with three other figures, and a servant behind. The woman who anoints Christ's feet is shown below with her jar of ointment and long flowing hair, with which she wipes his feet. A dog is also shown on the floor with a bone.A prophet is also shown at the apex of the window. technique: stained glass Church of St Gwenllwyfo, Dulas, Anglesey south wall of the chancel It has been suggested that a date for the lower scene is provided by a piece of glass included over the scene of the mocking of Christ, in the nave, which may have originally been placed over the scene of Christ seated at the table. However, the glass around it is discontinuous with the silver stain fragments around it. The scenes have probably been cut down to enable them to be fitted into the window aperture. |
