Church of St Peter, Lampeter, Ceredigion
vestry

The painting is a copy of that by Carlo Dolci, of around 1660-70, now in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence. St Peter's Church also owns a copy of the same date of Raphael's Madonna della Seggiola, also in the Palazzo Pitti. As both paintings were in Florence at this date (though the Magdalene only moved to the Pitti in 1928) it is likely that the copies were commissioned at the same time, and probably by John Scandrett Harford. Harford gave another copy-painting to the chapel of what was then St David's College in Lampeter as an altarpiece. As the principal of the college when it opened in 1827 was also vicar of Lampeter, it is probable that these paintings were all part of one donation - by the Lord of the Manor - to parish church and college.
