Christ with the Doctors and Women Teaching a Child
Photo © Martin Crampin, Imaging the Bible in Wales | 1945 Two-light window depicting Christ disputing with the doctors of the Law in the Temple, and a group of women teaching a child from a scroll. Both scenes are attended by angels above.technique: stained glass size: 50 cm (width of each light) [approx] firm/studio: Abbott & Co. Ltd Church of St John, Colwyn Bay, Conwy north wall of the north transept Texts: 'All who heard Him were astonished' (Luke 2:47); 'The Lord give thee wisdom and understanding' (1 Chronicles 22:12). The angel at the top of the right-hand light holds the text 'The Word was made Flesh' (John 1:14). The window was given in memory of Rosa Hovey, who died in 1932. She was the Head of Penrhos College for 34 years. The scene on the right is not clear, and the text above, 'The Word was made Flesh' might indicate that this is Christ being taught to read by his mother. However, none of the figures has a halo, and the text below is probably more instructive, as it concerns the young Solomon. If the scene concerning the instruction of Solomon is intended, the theme of wisdom and learning runs through the window, appropriate to a window given in memory of a former headmistress. |
