Faith
detail from Faith and Love
Photo © Martin Crampin | 1901 Two-light window with standing female figures.technique: stained glass size: 120 cm (width of whole) [approx] artist: Henry Holiday Church of St Matthew, Buckley, Flintshire south wall of the chancel Texts: 'Above all taking the shield of faith', 'Perfect love casteth out fear'. Dedication: 'To the glory of God and in beloved memory of William Ewart Gladstone (d.1898) dedicated by MD.' Mary Drew was his daughter, and married to the vicar of the parish. The representation of Faith here is slightly unusual, as she is not shown with her usual identifying attributes of a chalice and/or cross, but with a gospel book. The figure of Love (Charity) is more conventional, though the limitation of the space available shows her with only the one child. |
