Christ with the Virgin Mary and St John

Photo © Martin Crampin | 1885 The sanctuary windows comprise five three-light windows with standing figures. The figures, from left to right, are Noah, Abraham with Isaac, Moses, Isaiah, David, John the Baptist, Christ flanked by Mary and John, Mary Magdalene, Peter, Stephen, and the Welsh saints Llure, David and Afan. The windows also include family heraldry and inscriptions below, and the instruments of the Passion above.
Christ stands at the centre of the window, crowned and holding an orb, with Mary and John standing at each side. Family heraldry below, with inscription surrounded by vine decoration, and shields above with the cross, and the superscription 'INRI'. The uppermost light has a roundel with the Agnus Dei.technique: stained glass size: 35 cm (width of each light) firm/studio: C.E. Kempe cartoonist: Wyndham Hope Hughes designer: John Carter Church of All Saints, Newbridge-on-Wye east wall of the sanctuary apse Text with John: 'That which we have seen & heard declare we unto you' (I John 1:3). The inscription records the gift of the window by Susan Catherine Venables, in memory of her husband Joseph Henry Venables (1813–1866). The arrangement of the three figures echoes the traditional depiction of Mary and John at each side of Christ on the cross. It was Kempe's original intention to depict the crucified Christ at the centre, with the whole set of windows illustrating the doctrine of the Atonement. |
