Photo © Martin Crampin | 1896 Single-light window with a standing female figure holding lilies.technique: stained glass size: 53 cm (width) firm/studio: James Powell & Sons designer: Ernest Penwarden Church of St Cynog, Penderyn, Rhondda Cynon Taff north wall of the sanctuary According to the archives of the firm at the V&A Art and Design Archives, the artist responsible for the cartoon was Ernest Penwarden (1895). Dedication: 'In loving memory of J.M.J. Harris of Treferig and Bodwigiad erected by his niece and nephew Maud Gwenllian and Morgan Harris Whitting Jany 1896.' The title on the window refers to the famous text with which Christ welcomes children into his presence: 'Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven' (Matthew 19: 14). The meaning of the window is otherwise unclear. A woman dressed in a blue cloak holding lilies may be intended to represent the Virgin Mary, although she does not have a halo to indicate that she is a saint. |
