The Ascension
Photo © Martin Crampin | about 1889 Three-light window. Christ ascending in the clouds with the eleven disciples below and angels in the top half of the outer lights.technique: stained glass firm/studio: Mayer & Co. Church of St David, Bangor, Gwynedd east wall of the chancel The North Wales Express, 15 November 1889, noted the dedication of the reredos and a window given to the church by Elizabeth Atcherley Symes, Gorphwysfa, Bangor, who also paid for the building of the church, in memory of Dean Edwards. She also gave a window to Bangor Cathedral that was made by the same firm in 1886. Elizabeth Atcherley Symes died in 1890. Although newspaper reports make it clear that she was responsible for the commissioning of the east and west windows (see also North Wales Chronicle 16 November 1889), the fact that all of the other main windows in the transepts and nave were by the same firm and appear to be of a similar date suggests that she was also involved in the complete scheme. |
