The Beatitudes

1910 The text of the Beatitudes along the walls of the nave, beneath the clerestory windows, with decorative stencilling and angels. The decoration continues above the chancel, with text from Psalm 150. technique: painting Church of St Matthew, Buckley, Flintshire above the arches of the nave, beneath the clerestory windows Texts from Matthew 5:3-10: 'Blessed are the poor in spirit, Blessed are they that mourn, Blessed are the meek, Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness, Blessed are the merciful, Blessed are the pure in heart, Blessed are the peacemakers, Blessed are they that are persecuted for righteousness sake'. At the east end of the decoration the texts are the first and last verses of the final psalm in the psalter, taken from the translation by Miles Coverdale and printed in the Book of Common Prayer: 'O praise God in his holiness, praise Him in the firmament of his power', 'Let everything that has breath praise the Lord'.
