Christ with Disciples and Saints
Photo © Martin Crampin | 1896 Central panel depicts Christ as shepherd with seven disciples, one of whom kneels, with standing figures of the saints Melangell, Asaph, Beuno, and Winefride at either side.medium: wood technique: carved artist: Thomas Earp designer: F. R. Kempson Church of St Beuno, Berriew, Powys east wall of the chancel The subject of the main panel is not immediately clear. Christ stands among a group (but not all) of disciples. One figure is kneeling, could this be a post-Resurrection scene, with Thomas making his declaration of faith, or with Peter being exhorted to 'feed my sheep'? As Christ is depicted with a shepherd's staff, and with a sheep at his side, the latter seems likely. |
