Christ with the Chalice and Host
detail from Christ with the Elements of the Eucharist and The Agony in the Garden
Photo © Martin Crampin | probably 1860s Three-light window. Scenes showing Christ at prayer, with the elements of the eucharist, and kneeling with a vision of a chalice. Decorated panels above and below with biblical texts and symbols including (below) Agnus Dei, cross with crown of thorns and pelican feeding her chicks.technique: stained glass Church of St Michael, Abergele, Conwy north wall The window shares similarities with windows by James Ballantine, such as nearby at Tremeirchion and Llanelian-yn-Rhos. Texts: 'My soul is exceeding sorrowful even unto Death' (Matthew 26:38); 'As often as ye eat this bread and drink this cup ye do shew the Lord's death till he come' (1 Corinthians 11:26); 'O my Father if this cup may not pass away except I drink it thy will be done' (Matthew 26:42). The texts above the scenes in the outer lights imply that both scenes are depictions of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane. |
