Jesus is Laid in the Sepulchre
from Stations of the Cross
Photo © Martin Crampin, Imaging the Bible in Wales | about 1940-1970 medium: mahoganytechnique: carved size: 76 cm (approximate width of each piece) artist: Mother Maribel St Mary's Convent, Wantage St Mary Magdalene's Chapel Completed over a thirty-year period. The final station shows the Resurrection, a depiction of the risen Christ meeting Mary Magdalene. The stations followed the completion of the crucifixion scene, after which Mother Maribel decided to make an entire set. The stations were subsequently reproduced for churches in London and in Africa. She decided to carve a resurrection scene, but died before it was completed. She left instructions that it should not be reproduced in its unfinished state, although the community overturned this decision in 2007. |
