St David
detail from Christ the Teacher with Annunciation and St David
Photo © Martin Crampin, Imaging the Bible in Wales | 1936 Three-light window with figure of Christ in the centre light 'Our Lord the Teacher', The Annunciation to Mary left 'Hail Mary full of Grace', and St David 'Dewi Sant' right. Panels below each figure show (left to right) St Margaret knitting with a child at her feet, St Columba teaching children, and the consecration or ordination of a kneeling priest.technique: stained glass artist: A. E. Lemmon Church of St Sulien, Silian, Ceredigion east wall of the chancel Given by the children of John and Margaret Stewart, in memory of their parents and brother Jenkin William Stewart. The Stewarts were a Scottish family, with a residence at Silian, Ceredigion. It seems likely that the kneeling figure is a portrait of Jenkin William Stewart, and the faces of the Scottish saints Margaret and Columba are portraits of John and Margaret Stewart. The scene beneath the figure of David probably represents Dyfrig (Dubricius) consecrating David as archbishop of Wales in his place, an episode recounted by Geoffrey of Monmouth in his History of the Kings of Britain. |
