John Raven was an artist and the brother of Henry Holiday's wife Catherine, whom he met while visiting Betws-y-Coed in 1861. The figures are clearly intended to represent Faith, Hope and Charity. Hope (left) identified by the anchor; Faith (right) identified by the cross; and Charity, with children around her and nursing one of them.
