The Resurrection
Photo © Martin Crampin, Imaging the Bible in Wales | about 1854 Single-light window.technique: stained glass Church of St Mary, Dolgellau, Gwynedd north wall of the nave Composition ultimately inspired by Piero della Francesca's painting of around 1454. Matthew 28:4 alone mentions the guards on the tomb. Usually depicted half-asleep or blinded by the light emanating from the figure. Shown anachronistically, in the armour and with the weapons of the Middle Ages. The figure from which they fall back is the Risen Christ, but, in the Biblical narrative, it is an angel. |
