Jesus on the Sea of Galilee
Photo © Martin Crampin, Imaging the Bible in Wales | about 1865 Single-light window. The central panel depicts Jesus upholding the sinking Peter; with (above) Jesus asleep in the storm; and (below) Jesus teaching from the boat. These main scenes are surrounded by Old Testament characters including Adam (a somewhat homo-erotic figure); Moses; Aaron; Joshua; Enoch; Noah; Abraham; Isaac; Jacob.technique: stained glass firm/studio: Clayton & Bell Church of St Mary, Dolgellau, Gwynedd south wall Memorial to Major John Spooner (1795-1860) of Hopton Court, Worcestershire. The representations are dramatic and designed to illustrate examples of Faith. (note Hebrews 11:5 'by faith Enoch was translated...') The imaging of Matthew 13:2 is curious. The biblical text has the listening crowds on the seashore, but here they are shown in accompanying boats. |
