The Revd James Henry Alexander Gwyther Philipps was vicar of the Church of St Mary, Haverfordwest from 1859 until 1875. This portrait was probably painted when he was vicar of Madeley, Shropshire (from about 1841 until 1859), prior to his appointment to Haverfordwest.
