Winged figure of St Michael wielding a sword with the head of the Devil held down beneath his foot.

medium: oil on canvas
technique: painting

artist (after): Guido Reni

Private Collection

The picture is a copy of St Michael Slaying Lucifer (1636) by Guido Reni (1575-1642) for Cardinal Franceso Barberini, and now in Sta Maria della Concezione, Rome. The features of Lucifer are those of (from 1644) Pope Innocent X, which may be seen by comparison with his portrait by Velasquez.
