The figure of the dead Christ with four standing figures,

technique: lithography

artist: S. Curnow Vosper

Cyfarthfa Castle Museum and Art Gallery, Merthyr Tydfil

Drawn from a medieval original from Brittany, wall-mounted in the Chapelle de S. Nicolas at Priziac, near Le Faouet (Morbihan). There are further similar works in the collection at Cyfarthfa Castle, and a group of watercolours, including a version of this image (A 17330), in the collection of National Museum Wales, Cardiff. The watercolours were given to the museum by the sculptor William Goscombe John in 1945. Goscombe John visited Vosper in Britanny and encouraged him to record these medieval stone carvings. Information kindly provided by Jolyon Goodman.
