Christ in Majesty

Carved and painted wooden rood suspended from the roof with robed and crowned Christ on the cross. The figure is robed as King and Priest, reigning triumphant from the cross, and showing the wounds of the Passion. Hebrews 5 is the inspiration for this image, Christ 'a priest forever after the order of Melchisedec' (Hebrews 5:6, see also Genesis 14 and Psalms 110:4). The name Melchisedec means 'Justice & Peace', attributes of the Glorified Christ. As the author of Hebrews interpreted it, Melchisedec is the 'type' of Christ. The feast of Christ the King was inaugurated in the universal church on the Sunday before Advent early in the twentieth century, and images such as this reflect the popularity of the devotion.  (ObjectID=709 ImageID=1329) Original File Name=_MG_2995.jpg
