The Sacred Heart of Christ
1867 medium: oil on canvassize: 90 x 59.5 cm Church of St Mary, Betws-y-coed, Conwy south wall of the south aisle signed J. Steen, Stern, Staen? Because of the subject matter, may have been brought from the Catholic Church (closed 2002). For devotion to the Sacred Heart, see under St Michael, Abertillery. It is interesting to note how closely the artist has adhered here to the prevailing popular image of Jesus, which derives ultimately from the description in the so-called Lentulus Letter, which claimed to be that of an eye-witness, but almost certainly was fabricated in the thirteenth or fourteenth century.
