about 1920-1930
Christ crucified on the cross.

medium: wood
technique: carved
size: 200 cm (height of figure) [approx]

Oratory of Our Lady Queen of Peace, Caldey Island
adjacent to the oratory, on raised ground overlooking the sea

Inscription at base:
Wanderer, stay still and think
On me here a little while
How I hung on the cross so
That thou shouldst come to me.

There is a note that this is a translation from an insciption on a wayside cross in the Austrian Tyrol.

The lines of nails along the arms of the cross are intended to discourage seagulls from perching upon the crucifix, but artistically they are complementary to the inscription.
