This work and three other small panels in Oxford probably once decorated the sides of an altarpiece of around 1520. The panel was purchased by the Reverend John Sanford and, on account of its subject matter, re-used as the door of the Florentine marble tabernacle which he installed at Nynehead parish church in 1833.
