St Edmund (841-869) King of the East Angles. Killed 869 in battle with the Danes. A later account says that he was captured, refused to share his Christian kingdom with the heathen invaders, and was put to death by being tied to a tree and shot with arrows. Speedily revered as a martyr, his cult was widespread in the Middle Ages, and focussed on his shrine at Bury St Edmunds Abbey. Patron saint of Crickhowell Church.
