St John with the Governor of the Netherlands

1618 The kneeling figure of the governor is at prayer, facing outwards at the viewer. John stands behind, with the chalice containing the serpent. Scene with houses and trees in the background. Drusiana, who was resurrected by John in Ephesus, is depicted as the old lady in the house shown in the landscape. The modern inscription reads 'And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us' (1 John 5:14). Recent research by C.J. Berserik has identified the governor as Johannes van den Broeck, and he has suggested that it may have come from the Charterhouse at Lier, opening the possibility that more of the panels in the Neave collection came from Lier, rather than the Leuven Charterhouse as has often been thought. A companion panel has been identified and purchased in 2016 by Museum Leuven. It has been dated 1618 and attributed to Jan de Caumont, providing the date and attribution for this panel. The panel now at Leuven depicts Margaretha Vekemans and her daughter with their patron saints, Agnes and Elizabeth of Hungary, although Margaretha Vekemans was the wife of Alexander van den Broeck, administrator of the Antwerp municipal treasury. The presence of the apostle John in this panel lends weight to the identification of the kneeling figure as a Johannes rather than an Alexander.  (ObjectID=3850 ImageID=6797) Original File Name=Llanwenllwyfo_MG_7478.jpg
