Christ of Angle

1926 Depicting the Risen Christ with arms outstretched on the cross, angels, the sun and the moon and local scenes including the church, chapel and schoolhouse. medium: wood technique: painted size: 92.5 x 166 cm designer: John Coates Carter Fisherman's Chapel, Angle, Pembrokeshire east wall Inscription: 'I can do all things in Christ who strengtheneth me'. Dedication: 'Praise God for Elizabeth Mirehouse who died 1880 and her daughters Fanny (d.1901) and Emma Mirehouse (d.1925). Generous benefactors of this parish in whose memory this Chapel is furnished and adorned AD 1926. Grant them O Lord eternal rest'. A version of the Christus Rex, favoured by Coates Carter, but here the Christ in the eucharistic robes of the priest is not crowned. Note also the longhorn cattle, and the nineteenth century warship beyond the headland (a reference to the naval associations of Milford Haven and Pembroke Dock) the design reminiscent of that for long printed on the matchboxes of 'England's Glory'.  (ObjectID=27 ImageID=615) Original File Name=_MG_0932.jpg
