Baily has here selected two of the Instruments of the Passion, both associated with the nails that held Christ to the cross. The image of the Veronica seems to be derived from a nineteenth century print, distributed widely by the Confraternity of the Holy Face, established at Tours in 1850. It also bears some resemblance to the face on the Turin Shroud, though the familiar photograph of this dates from 1931, after this window was made.
